Interesting facts about Cheetahs

  • Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) the fastest animal on land, belongs to Cat family. It can reach speed of 120 km/hr.
  • Cheetah can be easily identified by round black spots on its body and black tear marks that run from the corner of the eyes to mouth. Its tail has 4-6 black rings and a black tuft of hair on the end.
  • It has a slender body with long legs, a small head and high-set eyes.
  • It weighs upto 65 kgs and is 115 to 135 cms long. Tail is usually very long (around 80 cms).
  • Cheetahs cannot roar and can only pur.
  • It is a carnivore and prefers deer and eats mostly mammals.
  • Cheetah hunts by sight than by smell.
  • Cheetah cannot maintain its sprinting speed for more than a minute as its body becomes very hot.
  • Female Cheetahs always hunt alone while males hunt in groups.
  • Male Cheetahs mark their territory like dogs.
  • Gestation period of Cheetah is around 3 months.
  • Life span of a Cheetah is 12 years.
  • “King Cheetah” is one variety with large merged spots.
  • Cheetahs are found in Africa and Asia.

Cheetah Conservation Fund has been formed in 1990 to protect the Cheetahs from becoming extinct.
